Extraterrestrial microbiology.

چکیده
I N T H E E F F O R T of devising ways and means of studying the existence of living organisms on other planets, attention must be focussed on microorganisms. This is not entirely due to professi, onal prejudice of microbiology, but is the consequence of accepted realization that microorganisms are responsible for the major amount of turnover of matter on earth and that life of the higher plants and animals is inconceivable in the absence o,f microorganisms. TO cite only a few major examples, it must be remembered that 80 per cent of all photosynthesis, that is, 80 per cent of the total amount of oxygen released into the atmosphere is carried out by oceanic microorganisms, and 90 per cent of the total carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere is brought forth by the actions of microorganisms. Without microorganisms the nitrogen content of the soil would not be replenished, nor would sulfur be available in a biologically useful form. It is apparent then that, even in the absence of higher plants and animals, the basic ecology of the earth would not be changed. Since it is therefore possible

Resistance of Bacillus endospores to extreme terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments.
Endospores of Bacillus spp., especially Bacillus subtilis, have served as experimental models for exploring the molecular mechanisms underlying the incredible longevity of spores and their resistance to environmental insults. In this review we summarize the molecular laboratory model of spore resistance mechanisms and attempt to use the model as a basis for exploration of the resistance of spor...
متن کاملMultiplication of microbes below 0.690 water activity: implications for terrestrial and extraterrestrial life.
Since a key requirement of known life forms is available water (water activity; aw ), recent searches for signatures of past life in terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments have targeted places known to have contained significant quantities of biologically available water. However, early life on Earth inhabited high-salt environments, suggesting an ability to withstand low water-activity....
متن کاملCultivation of anaerobic and facultatively anaerobic bacteria from spacecraft-associated clean rooms.
In the course of this biodiversity study, the cultivable microbial community of European spacecraft-associated clean rooms and the Herschel Space Observatory located therein were analyzed during routine assembly operations. Here, we focused on microorganisms capable of growing without oxygen. Anaerobes play a significant role in planetary protection considerations since extraterrestrial environ...
متن کاملThe limits for life under multiple extremes.
Life on Earth is limited by physical and chemical extremes that define the 'habitable space' within which it operates. Aside from its requirement for liquid water, no definite limits have been established for life under any extreme. Here, we employ growth data published for 67 prokaryotic strains to explore the limitations for microbial life under combined extremes of temperature, pH, salt (NaC...
متن کاملExperimental methods for studying microbial survival in extraterrestrial environments.
Microorganisms can be used as model systems for studying biological responses to extraterrestrial conditions; however, the methods for studying their response are extremely challenging. Since the first high altitude microbiological experiment in 1935 a large number of facilities have been developed for short- and long-term microbial exposure experiments. Examples are the BIOPAN facility, used f...
متن کاملWhat's up down there?
The development of careful quality assurance criteria assuring freedom from contamination in all aspects of sample recovery has opened the window to studies of a fascinating new microbial biome in the deep subsurface. Organisms have been recovered with unusual metabolic capabilities and a chemosynthetic lifestyle independent of the recent surface photosynthetically derived energy inputs. The pr...
